We have a 2008 Rockwood 8285SS 5th wheel. We were invaded by mice. They were mainly in the ceiling in the A/C ducts ( really slots cut in the foam). Not sure how much damage they did or for sure how they got there. We did find that in the right wheel well there is the manual crank for the slideout. There is a rather large hole around it. From here they could get to the subfloor and then use any of 4 holes to get to the basement. From here they could use 2 ways to get to the ceiling. If not this way then they some how got in through the A/C on the roof, but this should be sealed from the outside. We have tried to seal all of these methods, but....

We had trouble with mice. But since strategically placing fabric softer dryer sheet I mice have moved on.

What's the fabric softener dryer sheet trick? We have our first RV and will be storing it at the RV resort over the winter. It's out in the boonies and several owners say they have had problems over the winter with mice. We are next to a cornfield and I'm sure as soon as harvest comes there will be critters!

I have not had problems with mice (yet), but I am curious on how the fabric softner dryer sheet keeps the little critters out. Is it the smell?

The old sage that told me said that when using the fabric softner dryer sheets it is the smell that keeps them away.

Yep, in the winter...the "meeses" will try to find a warm winter home. I know the animal lovers will hate this solution, but I really don't care, ha! My pest service (for my house) gave me some poison that I put in my 5ver. I don't know the name of it, but when the mice eat it they head for water OUTSIDE your RV. That way they do not die in the RV and smell it up. Good luck. (Just hope a big black snake does not follow the mice into your RV like one did my old Winnebago some years back.)

The dryer sheets worked for us. I bought a big box of Bounce at Sam's club and just put them everywhere. Especially in the corners of the slides and on the beds and in the cabinets. I also climbed underneath and filled any gaps and cracks with expanding foam or caulk. So far so good. The only other thing I noticed is that the trailer frame is an I beam. The plastic lower body panel behind the rear bumper has a large space on either side of the frame leading right into the underbelly. I have not figured out how to close that off yet but will try to resolve that before winter storage. I also put expanding foam into the holes coming from the underbelly into the camper. There were several around the camper from wires, and pipes, etc.

I was just told that the best thing to use to seal an opening against mice is Steel Wool. I am not sure how you can keep the steel wool in place. I will be trying to find a way.

I've done the steel wool in the house. We have radiant heat. The pipes start in the basement and run in a corner in every room up to the 2nd floor to the radiators, hence holes in the floors/ceilings. We got mice our first year and I tucked steel wool into the openings surrounding the pipes. Mice can't chew through steel wool, won't nest in it, and the heat in the pipes doesn't cause a problem as if I would have used fabric sheets. We did find the hole and filled it with foam - no problems since! However, this won't work in corners and such as they can go around it. It comes in small rolls and can easily be pulled apart to stuff into places. I'll add the dryer sheets to the RV when we close it up this month, thanks for the tip as - I DON'T LIKE MICE!
