It never ends .... Seems like every time we go out there is something new to deal with.
This weekend, it turned out to be the water filter canister. It's been fine for almost two seasons. After dewinterizing and 6 previous trips this year all of a sudden, the darn thing sprung a leak, through the top, around the threads and completely soaked our carpeting throughout the bedroom. I located the problem and tightened the canister to no avail. I removed the canister and the filter and reinstalled, tighten and thought all was well. We used our small wet/dry vacuum to suck-up all we could and thought the problem was fixed. Next morning we were in a second flood!!!!!!
This time I put vaseline on the o-ring and wrapped the threads of the canister with teflon tape. So far no more leaking. But ... I'm not a happy camper.
The o-ring looked loose and frankly small for the job it's supposed to do. This week I'll check it out at our dealer and replace the o-ring if possible. I also highly recommend to everyone that teflon tape be applied to the threads of the unit when reinstalling. Can't hurt!!!! Mabe just a bit of insurance ..... you DON'T want wet carpeting!!!!!
Cheers,
John

John, Sorry to hear that your weekend was messed up by a leaky water filter... Wet carpets, regardless of where they are can definitely "dampen" ones spirit...I have had my share of them in homes and on boats... When I installed a new queen bed base, which I made, in my 2304. I had to move and relocate the water tank, pump and filter to make room for it's extra large drawers. I installed a new filter element and the O ring was large and really filled up it's groove. It has never leaked a drop. From your description, it sounds like your filter's O ring may be damaged or to small for the job. You might want to check on this.. I checked with Forest River about replacement filter elements and O rings and they wanted $32.00 for a package of two and did not stock the O rings..I found the same filters at Home Depot for under $12.00...They do not include a new O ring with the filters either. You might find the right O ring at a plumbing supply.. Also, when I relocated the water pump, I cut two 8" X 8" squares of a thick pile carpet an then stacked them under the base of the water pump.. I did not fasten it down because the Pex tubing holds it in place. This has really cut down on the pump's noise....Hope this helps..

Good stuff, Bill.
Thanks for the reply. The o-ring, as I saw it on the weekend, was not torn but just seemed loose and not big enough to make a proper seal. Maybe that's just a year or so of being forced down in the tightened position. What caused it to all of a sudden start to leak is a mystery.
Strangely enough, we're having summer here in Ottawa (finally) and the temperatures have been in the high 80's the last couple of days with another one expected tomorrow .... so, I've been able to have the windows and doors open and everything is drying out very well.
I'm going to find a proper replacement o-ring .... get a spare or two and also use teflon on the threads. A little paranoid now? ... YUP!!!
Cheers,
John

Just a heads-up, John.... You may want to replace the ring and clean the housing really well. Vaseline is a petroleum jelly that eats away at rubber compounds (like that of the o-ring). If you have any doubts, see the warnings on a package of condoms. LOL

I'm confused...did the water filter come with the TT or was this an after market product? Also, is this only a problem for dry camping when using the water pump or anytime water is hooked up to the TT? Are they always located under the front bed? This may be something I didn't even know to look for. Thanks, Joe

Joe they filter the water for the entire trailer whether you use city water hookup or the pump. It will be located close to the city water inlet. Probably in the same area as your pump. Mine is in the cabinet under the bathroom sink with my pump. I always use the clear plumbers grease on my O-ring to prevent wear and make a good seal. So far no problems with a leak. Knock on wood!!
The filter should be replace once a season as well so if you haven't done yours it probably needs replacing. Your trailer should have come with a white filter housing wrench to open and close the canister.

Most trailers have a whole house type filter system in them, most of the ones I have seen take a 10" replaceable cartridge. You can buy a variety of different micron ratings on the filters but I have found a 30 micron sediment filter works well and doesn't drop the water pressure in the trailer too much, going with smaller micron rating will drop your water pressure.

I used a double male 3/4" threaded nylon nipple to take the filter canister out of the loop when I put the pink stuff in last Fall. This year, after I flushed the system, I was going to put the nipple back in my garage with everything else that I won't need until I winterize again, but had second thoughts and tossed it into the small toolkit that I keep in the TT. It's about a $1.50 part, but it allows me to bypass the filter in just a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the info. Norm...I thought you only had a water filter if you put one in after market. Joe
