We're planning on venturing into the US from Canada a few times this summer and wonder if someone can give us some pointers for border crossings?

i.e. What lane to be in at the crossing? We're towing an 8313SS and i've witnessed travel trailers in the truck lanes, and travel trailers in the car lanes. Which is right? I imagine we'll hit New York from Niagara Falls first.

What can we bring? No meat and fruit I understand?

Thanks!

- Al

Anybody got any input on this one?

I usually go through the car lanes. Sometimes there is a lane specified for RV's but not usually. If you take fruit across the border, apples pears etc, leave the labels on that show they come from Canada or US as they will confiscate them without a label. I usually also buy my meats whenever we get to where we are going just to avoid border hassles. I do take all my own canned and processed foods though which are never a problem. Just be aware to declare everything as they usually go into the trailer and look agound, especially going into the US. Never been checked coming back to Canada.

Well I guess I'm the odd one out, We entered the USA with no problems at all and very friendly customs officials, but the return entry back into Canada I think we caught the customs guy on a bad day. He went through all four of our trailers and not one smile or welcome home from him. We all felt like criminals.

Everything you ever needed or want to know about crossing border from USA to Canada (for citizens of both countries) can be found here: http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5082-eng.html .....
I would guess that the Border Protection website in the USA has the same pertinent info for going the other way (south).

A little off topic but for anyone travelling to Newfoundland you should be aware that your tow vehicle and trailer will be thoroughly inspected for potato's or anything else that may contain soil. Newfoundland has potato wart disease and they inspect every vehicle leaving the island. In 2004 when we were there they went through everything and even vaccumed the driver and passenger floor in the van to remove any accumulated dirt.

Couldn't they vacuum the whole truck? They could use that in their advertisements. Come visit, we'll detail your vehicle! Add a wash and wax and we'll be there!

Thanks for everyone's input so far.
