Illinois DOT Says I-80 Bridge "Critical" But Safe
Updated: Sep 21, 2009 04:13 PM
A new study gives a better idea of the condition of the I-80 bridge.
An Illinois Department of Transportation study rates the bridge's super structure as being "critical" and that it may require repairs.
But that doesn't mean it's unsafe to cross. During inspection, the DOT says it found cracks in some of the beams on the outer lanes of the bridge. That's why they decided to close those lanes.
"The bridge is perfectly safe," says Ralph Anderson, Bureau Chief of Bridges and Structures for the DOT. "There's no problems with the inner portion and plans are in the process of getting the four lanes open as soon as we can."
He says there's still a lot of work to do before that happens. The DOT still needs to develop plans, fabricate steel and get bids for contracts.
