Does anyone use the water filter that came inline on your TT? I took mine out, because I get better water pressure and Im afraid if I leave the filter in, it will get moldy..because we are only weekenders...and not every weekend

I do use mine, but recently removed it with plans to replace. It was the original(2 years this month) and had NO problems with it. Didn't even notice a change in water pressure last trip out, which has always been good.
We're weekend campers mostly(at least once a month). I'll be installing a new one as soon as I find a 20 Micro filter locally. |

Hi Scott
We use our onboard water filter, yes depending on the filters you use they can drop the water pressure, as far as it getting moldy, if you use a filter that meets the NSF 43 or NSF 53 standards it should not be a problem, of course we always run the water for a few minutes before using it for drinking. In my opinion the filter does prevent a lot of fine sediment from entering the trailers plumbing. I picked up an Oxygenics shower head to install when I bring the trailer home from winter storage in a couple weeks, the shower is really the only place we have noticed a lower water pressure with a filter installed.

Scott,
We use ours to. It keeps the dirt and sediment out of the trailer plumbing. Especially the hot water heater. We put ours in at the start of summer camping season and take it out when winterizing and have never had a problem with mold or anything like that. I have even heard of people that use an outdoor filter on the hose when they fill the fresh water tank so that they don't get sediment into the tank.

Replied to this same topic over at the Forest River Forums.
Replaced my water filter yesterday with the a 20 Micron. Forest River installs and sells the .5 Micron which lowers water pressure. I have no problem with the 20 Micron as far as sediment passing through. 20 Microns is pretty darn small.

How Big is a Micron?
There are 25,400 microns in one inch. This dot (.) is approximately 1/64 of an inch wide and equals 615 microns.

Interesting thread! ... and I must say I feel a little silly!!
Last year, when we did the PDI for our 2603, the Dealer suggested we not even install the filter because they 'jam up', reduce pressure and are extremely expensive to replace. He quoted something like $80.00 !!!!!!
We've been using the Wally World in-line filters that attach to the fill hose on the exterior. They cost about $30.00.
What I'm seeing here is that inexpensive replacement filters of reasonable micron size are available for our Rockwood filter canisters !!!! Are there any other particular specifications to buying the replacement filters? 10" was mentioned in a previous post. Are these units that standard?

I was just thinking about this topic earlier today and then i look on here and there it is!! Talk about a wealth of information. The 831krss i ordered of course comes with the filter system that filters all the water coming into the trailer. The salesman made this sound like it was a good thing instead of having just an undersink filter that would filter just the sink water. I dont know about you guys, but i dont need filtered water to take a shower with and flush a toilet and i dont drink sink water anyway. It seems to me it really is just a useless gadget that isnt important anyway. What do you think is worse, drinking a little water that might have a few bugs living in it, or eating that chicken that was shot up with steroids and hormones that your about to put on that grill while your camping? I say live dangerously. go ahead and take a sip if you dare. If you drink it and then glow at night you'll save the planet by not having to use electricity to turn the lights on.
5 more weeks till my new baby arrives!!!! |

Erik,
I honestly don't fell a filtered system is useless. I keep a filter installed to eliminate sediment and particulates from the plumbing system, mainly the water heater tank. When camping, we drink bottled water for drinking and cooking, as we do at home.
When connected to a campground water supply especially, you never know where the water comes from.
Could be from a shallow well.
